It's all downhill from here

Yesterday, I paid a visit to my father-in-law, who is also my audiologist, to make some adjustments to the programming of my hearing aids. I asked him if he could perform a new hearing test for me and generate a new audiogram since it's been a couple of years since I've had one done. We did that and I guess I was pretty dismayed, but not necessarily surprised, to see the results.
My speech discrimination is down to 56% in my right ear. My left ear is around 80%. Hearing in both ears seem to have dropped 5 or 10 dB and my right ear has developed a "noise notch" in higher frequencies.
I spoke with a friend who recently got a cochlear implant and he said the guidelines his doctors shared with him were a severe/profound hearing loss and less than 40% speech discrimination.
