Area man plows forward

Posted: 30 September 2002 at 17:05:10

The last 10 days have been crazy. I'm amazed I'm still thinking straight, but it's been a lot of hard work and a lot of fun.

Local man appreciates unexpected assistance

On Sunday, 22 Sept, my parents and my brother came to our house to help us do some work on the basement bathroom. I wasn't expecting this, but my mom called on Saturday and said they were coming and wanted to know what they should bring.

Upon finding out they were coming, I borrowed Dave's truck and went to Home Depot to get a bathtub and some wallboard.

When Christine and I carried the bathtub down into the basement, I realized I got the wrong bathtub! I got a left-handed bathtub instead of a right-handed one.

See, what happened was that there was a right-handed bathtub available, but the box was ripped pretty bad, so I moved it asides and grabbed the tub underneath it - which was in a box that was in good shape. I didn't think to look to see if it was the right kind of bathtub or not. I should have.

When my brother came on Sunday, he took the bathtub back and exchanged it. While he was gone, my dad and I got wallboard hung in the closet and on part of the ceiling. It was starting to look like a bathroom (or some kind of room).

Once we had the right bathtub, we were able to connect the drain to the sewer line that Dave and I exposed under the basement floor when we chiseled the hole last year.

After that was hooked up, I poured some water into the tub and made sure it drained without leaking and that the drain lever properly stopped up the drain like it's supposed to. It did.

That was hard work! But it was nice to have it done.

Area man speaks at Computer Technology Showcase

Tuesday and Wednesday were the dates for the Computer Technology Showcase held at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City and I was giving a presentation on using Linux in the workplace on Tuesday morning.

I knew what I needed to present, but I hadn't really put together the entire presentation as of Monday afternoon. Fortunately, Chadd was able to help me put together some case studies based on experiences Iodynamics has had with past and current clients and I was able to give a 45-minute presentation with it.

I was late getting to the Salt Palace because I forgot to take my laptop home from work with me Monday and had to run to Orem Tuesday morning to get it before going to Salt Lake.

(On Monday morning, I had to drive back home to Hyrum because I had forgotten some medication I needed. So I spent a lot of time driving on Monday and Tuesday.)

The CTS was small. Dave and I were the only Iodynamics attendees on Tuesday. Mike showed up for a while on Wednesday. The Salt Lake Linux Users Group had a nice plot of booth space and the Linux Theater — which had presentations running most of the time both days.

Area men do computerized visuals for Park City concert

A few weeks ago, my friend Thom from the band Sons Of Nothing asked me about doing computer-generated and video visual effects for their FloydShow of Pink Floyd songs at Harry O's in Park City on Thursday, 26 Sept.

I agreed to do it and spent a lot of what free time I had before and after doing the CTS presentation working on that. I created some Corel Presentations slideshows with a collection of image files. I downloaded about 4 visualization plug-ins for Winamp and configured the line-in plugin so that the visualizations would be keyed on the audio signal generated from a connected microphone or line-input cable. And, I rendered some video clips from a VHS tape Thom had of Pink Floyd videos.

Dave came down and met up with me at my parents' house in West Valley and then rode up with me to the concert. He helped operate the video projector and helped me set up and tear down. It was a lot of fun.

The visuals were a great addition to an already polished musical performance. The band has really tightened up their sound since I saw/heard them last at the Flyin Zion party in March.

The Thursday night show was a kind of second tryout for the band to get a weekend gig with the club. It seems to have worked. The club has committed to a weekend booking sometime in the near future. That's great news for the band.

I had a couple guys talk to me about the visuals and one guy asked how much I charged. Who knows?! Maybe this could be a new line of work for me. Heh heh.

Area man tries to take it easy and catch up

After all that work on various projects, I had fallen behind on Iodynamics work and was generally tired of looming to-do items. So, I concentrated on catching up on Iodynamics work this last weekend and relaxing. It was nice.
