In the dark

Posted: 15 November 2002 at 14:36:59

I'm at work now and the power is out. Apparently some electrical contractors are doing some work outside so they had to cut the power for at least two hours. We've been without power since about 11:45. I think, if the power doesn't come back on by 2, I'm just taking off.

Harry Potter Fever

I was invited to go with some people from work to see Harry Potter and the Chamber Of Secrets (the second Harry Potter movie) last night at midnight (well, 12:01). But, I hadn't seen the first movie! So, I rented it last night, but I didn't get a chance to see it all, so I had to ask my work buddies how it ended.

The second movie was fun. We saw it at the Jordan Commons theater— a really nice cineplex in Sandy. I'd never been there before.

I'm still no Harry Potter "fan" but I enjoyed the movie and I definitely appreciate the fact that it is very kid-friendly.

Thank You Wal-Mart! You've been great!

Last night, while I was watching Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone DVD on my computer, my brother Tom called and asked if I wanted to accompany him to Wal-Mart. He needed some new pants.

I agreed and stopped the movie when he came to get me. We went to Wal-Mart where Tom could only find one pair of Wranglers in his size. We then walked back to the home electronics department to see if they had any Apex AD-1500 DVD players - which I told Tom he should get.

After we looked at DVD players, we were walking down an aisle when a fairly attractive young girl came around the corner toward us. Tom stopped and moved out of her way so she could pass. Then, he bumped into something and his new Wranger jeans fell out of his hands and hit the floor by his feet. I just couldn't help myself. It was just too precious of a moment.

“You just drop your pants every time a good looking girl walks by, huh?”

Tom thought that was funny. The timing was good.

Tom and me

My brother and I really live in completely different worlds. It's nice that our lives can intersect in some way because there is not much we have in common besides our genetics.

Tom is sort of a mercenary handyman. He is contracted to do all kinds of jobs from home remodeling, industrial crate construction, and - lately- driving large snowcat-type vehicles up mountains.

Tom drives a Ford F350 extended cab pickup truck with “dualie” wheels. It gets 11 miles per gallon on a good day.

I drive a Mazda Protege that gets 38 miles per gallon on a good day.

Tom wears cowboy boots almost exclusively. I wear Doctor Martin boots or black leather sandals most of the time.

Relaxing example of elastic collisionsTom admires large breasted women and usually won't pay attention to a woman unless it's fairly obvious she had a significant breast augmentation procedure done.

I, on the other hand, don't really care about that. In fact, if I had a preference, it would be natural mamaries as opposed to artificial. When I see a pair of “big knockers,” the first thing that comes to my mind are those novelty relaxation toys that I've seen on people's desk that involve five silver balls suspended by string that knock into each other demonstrating transference of kinetic energy through solids.

I think most people I know would find my brother shallow, superficial, and insensitive to women. Some of that is true. Some of it is chosen. I think Tom has chosen to be less sensitive to women because of the grueling divorce he went through with his ex-wife. He shuns committed relationships and won't let women get too close to him.

Despite it all, he's a good guy who will nearly always try to help you out if you need help. He has a good ethical backbone, doesn't try to cheat people and will usually tell you like it is.

He's a pretty good dad too.

I love my brother.
