The Father of Desolation

Posted: 18 June 2001 at 00:35:33

Sunday was the national holiday Fathers' Day. I think these kinds of holidays should be celebrated on Mondays like Memorial Day and Labor Day. What good is celebrating these days on Sunday? We're already taking it easy on Sunday, right?

I took the family down to Salt Lake City to do a Fathers' Day thing with my brother, his kids, and my parents (my father in particular).

My dad reading a book That's my dad in the picture shown here. He's reading a book about Utah history which my brother gave him. I went with my mom on Thursday and helped her get a Hewlett Packard ScanJet 2100C USB scanner for my dad's Fathers' Day gift this year. My gift this year, I guess, was spending the time hooking that up and showing him how to use it. I just won't send him a bill. That's about all I can afford at this time.

I had to ask my parents for some money while I was down there. It would be very nice to get a job offer this week so I can get back to work. This is getting silly. I've never had this much trouble finding contract work or a full-time job.

Incidentally, I checked the Help Wanted section of the Salt Lake City papers today for work and only found three jobs that would be worth my applying for. That's really unusual. I'm guessing/hoping mid-June is just a terrible time to be looking for work. I'm going to start sending résumés to San Francisco, Portland, and Seattle this week. I don't really care anymore where I work, geographically, as long as it's doing something I can do and enjoy and make a decent living. Hopefully, someone local will respond with an offer before it comes to that.

Our Family in Juniper Yesterday was my wife's mother's family's annual reunion in Juniper, Idaho (a.k.a. out in the middle of nowhere). Juniper is a nice, remote place about 20 miles north of the Idaho-Utah border on I-84. It's about a 75 minute drive for us. That's where Christine's grandparents live as well as her uncle that runs the farm originally run by her grandfather.

We had a lot of fun in Juniper. Every year each of the children of Christine's grandparents has to give an update of what's been going on with their family. Sometimes the children do it and sometimes they delegate a member of the family to deliver this report. This year I was appointed to do it. It was fun. They told me I did a good job. Afterwards, however, I noticed I had a nice white deodorant stain on my black shirt from not putting my shirt on careful enough. That was kind of embarrassing.

I'm formulating ideas for an essay which will discuss an idea that the Internet is lacking usefulness because people aren't generating good content anymore and because of shifts from individual to commercial content providers. It should be interesting
