Okay, I'm going to drop some political commentary.
Cindy Sheehan = Not very smart
It's a testament to the weakness and disorganization of the liberal movement in the U.S. when the best thing they can find to rally around is Cindy Sheehan. I recently heard a snippet of an interview with Sheehan - I believe it was with Matt Lauer on the Today Show. Sheehan was asked if she would feel differently if her son Casey had been killed while serving in Afghanistan instead of in Iraq. She said, No, it was the same thing to her. The U.S. shouldn't be in Afghanistan either. It was then pointed out to Sheehan that Afghanistan was where Al Qaeda was camped out and that the attack was a direct response to 9/11. She said instead of attacking Afghanistan, the military should have gone directly after Al Qaeda.
Rush Limbaugh commented that by this logic, we shouldn't have gone to war with Germany during World War II. We should have just gone after Hitler.
It's clear to me that Sheehan is not coherent, sane, or stable. We're all sorry she lost her son (and now her husband), but I'm feeling very sad for the liberals who are lining up behind her.
Judge Roberts
He's not a right-wing radical. He's a sensible judge. Sure, the radical left-wing groups are out en force to protest the supreme court nomination. What's more meaningful to me are the non-political groups -- the more meaningful groups -- that are endorsing Roberts:
- U.S. Chamber of Commerce
- The National Bar Association
- National Fraternal Order of Police
- National Association of Manufacturers
Is it really meaningful that the ACLU opposes Roberts? I wouldn't be surprised if they had a fill-in-the-blank press release ready to go to oppose anyone Bush were to nominate. "John Roberts? Okay, scratch that in on that line and fax it to everyone."
I think Bush made a wise choice. I don't think any of the grandiose, histrionic allegations that Roberts is anti-women, anti-minority, anti-civil-liberties, etc. are going to stick. One story claimed -- dramatically -- that Roberts grew up in an all-white neighborhood. Is this really a problem? A lot of people grew up in all-white communities. It wasn't because of racial bias... You can't really have racial discrimination when there's little or no racial diversity. For example, there was one black kid in my grade in elementary school and one kid who had mixed race parents. Ooooh! I'm prone to discrimination because I attended a nearly all-white elementary school! Ooooh! I'm evil!
Give me a break.
Good one, Grondahl!
Calvin Grondahl did a hilarious cartoon for the Standard Examiner in Ogden, Utah in response to President Bush's visit to Salt Lake City and the anti-war protest organized by Salt Lake City major Rocky Anderson.
The joke here (if you don't get it) is that the environmentalist Anderson has long opposed the development of a new Legacy Highway to ease the traffic congestion on I-15 between Salt Lake and Davis and Weber counties.
