Buffy Season 3
A week or so ago, I received my Buffy The Vampire Slayer - Third Season DVD from Buy.com. I've only been into Buffy for less than a year, but because the show is currently in it's seventh season, I've had to do a lot catch up. I bought the first season box set and the second season box set and have been downloading VCD images and MPEG files of many of the other episodes since then.
So, I was excited to see the third season. I'd read a lot on the Internet about how the third season is proclaimed by many to be the best season ever. It certainly has some very good episodes.
I really enjoy watching Doppelgängland which is somewhat reminiscent of the original Star Trek episodes The Enemy Within and Mirror, Mirror. In this episode an evil, vampire Willow (played by Alyson Hannigan - who also plays our normally wonderful and good Willow) is taken from an alternate reality and brought into the Buffyverse where she raises a little hell trying to get back into "her world."
Hannigan just does a wonderful job playing both characters. One scene that makes me laugh every time features Good Willow wearing the dominatrixesque outfit of Vampire Willow and she's trying to stall a gang of vampires intent on feeding on a large group of people. Before entering the dance club where all the vampires are holed up, Willow tells Buffy and gang outside that they should bust in and attack the vampires when she gives her signal -- a scream for her life. Her masquerade is shakey and eventually her true identity is discovered by Anya, an ex-demon trying to get her demon powers back.
Willow screaming in Doppelgängland.
Here's an excerpt of the shooting script for this scene that may help you understand the wonderful humor of the scene:
ANYA
(crosses her arms)
I think he
(meaning Alfonse - the vampire)
should eat you.
WILLOW
(improvises quickly)
This girl has a history of mental problems
dating back to early childhood.
(desperately)
I'm a blood-sucking fiend!
(pats herself)
Look at my outfit!
ALPHONSE
A human. I should have smelled it right away.
WILLOW
A human? Oh yeah? Could a human do this?
She SCREAMS at the top of her lungs.
There is silence for a moment. Anya and Alphonse look at each other. Talk at once.
ALPHONSE
I'd say -- yeah, a human could do that.
ANYA
(simultaneously)
Uh huh. Most humans could, yeah ...
Willow is about ready to panic. Suddenly the door to the club is thrown open, and Buffy and Angel make their entrance.
Anyway- I love this show. I found myself getting teary when I watched The Prom. In this episode, Angel -- Buffy's boyfriend -- a vampire with a soul -- decides it's best for Buffy if he leaves town so she can have a chance at a "normal life." The stipulation being that being romantically involved with Angel means Buffy can't spend any time with him outside during the day and she will never be able to have children... long story.
Of course, The Prom is also about the high school prom and Buffy goes stag and is given the award of "class protector" since the class of 1999 had the lowest mortality rates in years.
Great show.
Well, that's all for now. I'll have to write some more later.
