New site, new Fozzolog

I've got brand new blogging software up on my site now. I guess we'll call it Fozzolog 1.99. It seems to be working pretty well. The only issue that has arisen is that the change in RSS propogation has caused the Utah Open Source Planet to include all of the most recent 25 entries in their aggregation. Fun.

I've also put up a new site design and this one is completely table-free. All the layout is done with positional CSS and seems to be pretty cross-browser friendly.

I'm using the original content from my old site throughout, so there are still some tables littered about, but the general layout -- the "wrapping", if you will -- is all CSS. The design is based on one I saw on the openwebdesign.org site called A20. I changed the color scheme and tweaked some of the components, but it's still largely intact.

It takes a lot of work to produce a truly functional table-free design and I applaud the folks who put forth the effort to do it.

More about the new Fozzolog

My old blogging codebase is set up to use a separate database for each site. On the server this site is hosted on, there are four or five sites which have Fozzolog-based weblogs on them. That means there are that many databases as well.

The new Fozzolog code has one database for all Fozzolog sites on a server. One reason I did this was so that there could be a central user database between all sites on a server.

The old Fozzolog code required the site owner to log into an administration facility via basic authentication to maintain entries. The new code integrates administration functions in with the public site and allows access based on authentication credentials.

The new Fozzolog offers varying levels of visibility or privacy for entries. The site owner can define a set of friends and make entries visibile to friends only (a feature used quite a bit on LiveJournal and other sites). The site owner can also make entries “private” either to keep private notes or to work privately on an entry before publishing it.

The new Fozzolog code uses the DBIx::Class object relational model (ORM) Perl module to handle things database related.

There are some things which aren’t finished yet. I plan to include thread support for comments, for example.

Please feel free to drop me a line if you have comments or questions. I am really curious to know if anyone would be interested in using this software other than me.
