2014 Subaru Forester has high oil consumption
I bought my 2014 Subaru Forester Limited brand new and have already put over 60,000 miles on it. The 2.5 liter engine takes 0W20 synthetic oil and I've changed the oil every 6-7,000 miles myself.
However, the low-oil indicator on the dash frequently illuminates about 4,000 miles after an oil change requiring me to add half of a quart of oil. The car has required one half to one full quart of additional oil between every oil change.
This car is my fifth Subaru and I've never had this problem with any of my past Subarus unless they have a gasket that needs to be replaced.
Well, as it turns out, recent Subaru engines have gained a reputation for this oil consumption problem. Consumer Reports has published a report highlighting the results of their study into car owners' claims that certain engines were consuming oil.
Consumer Reports says Subaru claims it's not unusual to have to add up to a quart every couple thousand miles. Consumer Reports, however, disagrees. There is, apparently, at least one class-action lawsuit naming Subaru about this problem.
